When Phil was thirteen years old, he was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer, and had his left leg amputated. Phil never let that bother him. Instead, he took full advantage of the platform the Lord had given him to show what faith really looks like. Phil said it himself that he only cried one time and that it was better to be here with just one leg rather than not be here at all. During the following years, Phil took advantage of the opportunities laid before him to encourage others through their circumstances and show the love of Jesus.

Phil never considered himself to be handicapped. In High school, Phil tried out for the wrestling team and made it. Phil competed in the bulky 112 pound weight class and the only match he ever won was the only one that we ever got on video. Even during this time, Phil found ways to sever and encourage others.

In 2003, Phil became the Youth Pastor at Sulphur Springs Baptist Church. In the following years Phil returned to school and received his undergraduate degree in Biblical Studies.  During this time he became the Associate Pastor. Also during this time, he was diagnosed with another type of cancer that was found in his jaw. During the time he received treatment for this cancer, he would always look for a way to encourage someone else and talk to them about the love of Jesus. He has told stories of talking to people while receiving chemotherapy about Jesus.

When writing sermons, Phil had a good ability to come up with acronyms and use them in bringing the word of God at any time. The weekend Phil passed away, a Sunday School Class from Boone Trail Baptist Church, where Phil was a member for several years, and Sulphur Springs Baptist Church held a benefit to assist Phil and his lovely bride Luann. During this same weekend, Phil went on to be with Jesus. Several folks thought it was a good idea to have a benefit like this on a regular basis and the idea of P.H.I.L. came up.
